about

This song was recorded at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle by legendary engineer, Kearney Barton (who recorded The Kingsmen “Jolly Green Giant” of “Louie, Louie” fame, The Sonics “Psycho”, The Frantics “Werewolf”, and many others.) It was an 8 track analog studio, recorded onto 1 inch reel tape. This song was pretty much recorded entirely live except the piano intro and a couple of minor vocal overdubs. The vocals were done live as the performance was going on, but I had to overdub the lead vocal of the 2nd bridge a few days later since I totally lost my voice while singing this song. I didn’t hold anything back. The thunder and birds chirping were the sounds the engineer recorded at his studio a few years prior and never used it on a song, and he was pleased to incorporate it into this song. For this particular version, I used it as an intro instead of an outro. Also, the piano intro was something the bass player, Nick Wilcox, wrote for another unfinished song. He made me promise that I can use that intro only if I can give him full credit when he finishes the other song he had in mind. Nearly 20 years later, it's still only on this song. I also deeply edited this version to make it a tighter song, about 4 minutes in length vs. the nearly 11 minute long original version. I overdubbed more backing vocals in my home studio.
The players were: Wayde Brown (me) on lead and backing vocals and guitars, Nick Wilcox on bass, piano, and backing vocals, and Dan Penland on drums and backing vocals.
This song was written around 1987-88 about one specific girl. In the early days of my writing, three gals were my main focus on love songs. Well, this one wasn’t a love song. This young lady and I became good friends and I fell for her. When we had an argument and a subject matter that I couldn’t get past, we split apart. I wrote a plethora of songs about how much I loved her and wished I could still be with her and so on. This song ended up being the opposite of that. I had to write this song to finally let her go in my head, not just my heart. As you can see by the lyrics, the verses are very angry while the bridges are sweet and loving. I purposely did that since those emotions were still there and very raw and confusing when I wrote it. I love the beat to this tune including all the little different things it does. It required the harshest vocal I have ever recorded. Luckily, I was young enough to pull it off. For this shorter version, I retitled it YOU TORTURE ME, taking out (WHY DO) just before it.

This makes recording #555.

Recorded at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle, WA. and MINE music Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

YOU TORTURE ME. YOU TORTURE ME. YOU TORTURE ME. YOU TORTURE ME.

I DID EVERYTHIN’ THAT YOU SAID. YOU RETURNED AN EMPTIED HEAD.
YOU TORTURE ME. MM, YOU TORTURE ME.

YOU MADE LOVE MORE THAN I. HOW’D YOU FEEL CHEATIN’ GUYS?
YOU TORTURE ME. OH, YOU TORTURE ME.

I LOVE YOU WITH ALL OF MY HEART AS I THINK OF THE THINGS WE ONCE KNEW.
GIVE ME A CHANCE TO PROVE MY LOVE TO YOU.

YOU TORTURE ME. OO, YOU TORTURE ME.

YOU LEFT ME IN DISGUST. YOU DON’T LOVE. YOU GAVE YOUR LUST.
YOU TORTURE ME. OH, YOU TORTURE, TORTURE ME.

I HATE YOU WITH MY MIND. LOVE IS GONE, NONE TO FIND.
OH, YOU TORTURE ME. YOU TORTURE, TORTURE ME.

WE HAD LOVE, A LOVE THAT’S SHARED BY FRIENDS WHO FEEL THE NEED.
I LOVE YOU MORE THAN I THOUGHT I’D SEE. I’M SORRY.

YOU TORTURE ME. OO, YOU TORTURE ME. SAID YOU TORTURE ME. WOW OH YOU TORTURE ME.

WHY? AH!

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
