Danny Wayne Penland: The Last Word--Individually and as a group, the Rice Cracker Project (RCP) has endured many challenges during the production of this album. Our personal lives have often intruded, making this a long three-year process. However, in spite of this, we feel we have done some of our best work to date. This project has a cohesive theme that looks at the sequence of our lives and our time here in this world, both past and present. It is a more powerful album than our first, with a conscious effort to balance dichotomy with sincerity, and the themes of time and loss can be heard in many of the songs. We hope when listening to these songs, particularly this album, the listener will be able to relate to them in a reflective and personal way.

One of the major events that helped shape this album was the loss of our close friend and long-time drummer, Danny Penland. We are very proud of the fact that this project featured only the members of RCP. We generated this album by ourselves with no guest performers, with one exception: Dan gets the last word! Whether in the studio, with family and friends, or just meditating alone, there is one unique and creative way to reflect on our lives and our actions: “OK! Now we’re recording.” Thanks, Dan!
