WHEN I LOOK INTO YOUR EYES

about

This song was written as a response to my father's song THE ORIENT. Originally, this song was an instrumental, but I always wanted to write lyrics to this since its inception. I was about 16 years old when I originally wrote it. It wasn't until 2016 that I completed the lyrics, and it wasn't the story I thought I was ever going to write. I thought the song was going to be about a beautiful woman and the character falling in love with her and looking into her lovely eyes, etc. It turned out to be a story based on true events in my life that took place in 2014, shortly after being involved in a major car wreck that would change my life forever. In the wreck, my wife and I were rear ended by a hit and run drunk driver (who they later found). We were stopped at a stop light when this woman hit us from behind, going nearly 60 mph, totaling our SUV. That event left me with a torn ligament in my neck (which eventually healed), a form of whiplash, and 3 bulging discs. Everything healed except the bulging discs in my neck, which I may need a fusion in the future. I've been fighting it with neck injections and steroids the last couple years to stave off the coming surgery, which I hope one day I may have other options. But, I wasn't the one who received the brunt of the injury, as we originally thought. My wife wasn't wearing her shoulder strap of her seat belt, and upon impact, she hit her head on the steering wheel. I know she was dazed for a good 30 seconds after the event, and most likely lost consciousness for that amount of time. From that moment onward, I noticed her eyes had a glaze to them that lasted for several months, hence writing this song with this particular title seemed fitting. After going to the ER, they stated she had a mild concussion and to follow up with her doctor. I knew she had problems since she kept repeating herself and telling me, over a period of a couple months, that her head was going numb. I told her to see a doctor but she refused. Eventually, her behavior totally changed, which involved anger issues, a personality change, constantly forgetting things, and an affair with a young man half my age. By the time I found out about all these things, the damage had already been done. With therapy, my wife seems to have regained a good part of herself, but still forgets things periodically (more so than what would be considered normal) and is sometimes apathetic, which is still totally opposite her personality from when I met her. And I have known her for over a decade before the wreck.
I, of course, went into a major depression and genuine sadness that consumed me for a couple years. A friend suggested I write a song about it, since he knows that when I do, it usually helps heal my wounds. However, as I told him, I can't force a song through me in such a state. It has to come from the heart and I have to be ready to write about it. That time came this year.
Since this song isn't a joyful one, I also wanted it to sound a bit odd, so I decided to sing it in a way I hadn't done before, with whispers, singing softly, in falsetto in some places, and full voice in others. I also had some strange harmony ideas I added to the background, using delays and heavy reverb. (Unfortunately, as I felt it would happen, my wife became my ex-wife a few years after this event. We couldn't recover as a couple.)
This is song #614.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

Look Into Your Eyes, I See There's Someone Else Disguised,
Not Knowing Who You Really Are, Dying Inside That Car.
Not Traveling Very Far, As You Died Inside Our Car.

I See You're Looking Very Strange, A Life That Has Been Rearranged.
The Day She Crashed Into Your Head, In That Moment Left You Dead.
Everything I Thought Was Said Turned To Lies Within His Bed.

From That Moment On I Saw You Cheated And You Lied, You Made Alibis,
And You Told Him You Loved Him And Were Falling For Him,
And Then You Left Me, Blindly, Alone Without Me.
To Be Alone In Our Bed Left Me Thinking Instead
That I Wish I Would I Die And No More I Cried,
Because You Lied, Yes You Lied.

When I Look Into Your Eyes, I See There's Someone Else Disguised,
Knowing Who You Are, Dying Inside That Car.
Not Traveling Very Far, As You Died Inside Our Car.

From That Moment On I Saw You Cheated, You Lied, You Made Alibis,
And You Told Him You Loved Him And Were Falling For Him,
And Then You Left Me, Blindly, Alone Without Me.
To Be Alone In Our Bed Left Me Thinking Instead
That I Wish I Would I Die And No More I Cried,
Because You Lied, Yes You Lied.

Now When I Look Into Your Eyes Through All The Pain And Realized,
You Gave Me Hope You're Still Alive When I Looked Into Your Eyes,
When I Looked Into Your Eyes, When I Looked Into Your Eyes.

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
