I wrote this song around 1986. It’s an instrumental response to a song my father wrote called, “The Orient.” I made a demo of it with me on guitar and my father playing the bass. I used a two track recorder and a Maxell cassette tape. The quality wasn’t very good but the performance was there, though I had the guitar panned on one side of the speakers and the bass on the other to balance the sound more easily, since I really didn’t know what I was doing back then. I took the demo, cleaned it up a bit, and then started my overdubs in the studio. I used several percussive instruments, from drums, bongos, tambourine, maracas, hand claps, and so on. Overall, I’m pleased with this particular version of this song. I opted not to put a rhythm guitar in it and just keep with the two main tracks of the bass and lead guitar. I know I could have duplicated the notes and performance of the tune, but I don’t have those particular guitar amplifiers anymore, and I wanted to keep the “purity” of the sound I was using back then. Hence, I just used this old demo recording as the template for the rest of the song to build upon.
