This is one of the odder experiments I’ve done. Before the digital answering machine came about, I had a bunch of messages saved onto a mini-cassette tape. Instead of destroying them, I decided to save them onto a digital format using the Audacity music editor program. Then, I spliced them all together to play at the same time, making it nearly impossible to notice who’s saying what or who was talking. It’s a very intriguing idea in my opinion. At no time did I want to have the voices recognizable and I didn’t want it to be understandable. Some people may state that it’s against the law to record people without their knowledge. Beside me saying, “Who the hell cares except for inept attorneys?” everyone who left a message had to know that they were being recorded. It’s obvious and common sense. Of course, I use “sounds” to create things I want and this is yet another example of this avant-garde process.
