THE CRAZY TAPE (THE FAMILY ALBUM) PART 2

from STRANGE SONGS TO LISTEN TO (2024 Remaster) by The Santairs

about

I was given my first cassette tape at age 7 and did my first recordings. I filled side A with a bunch of recordings of me, friends, and family singing, making noises, talking, etc. I took a few months doing this. But then I had side B. I didn’t know how to fill it and I wanted to use it, but I didn’t exactly want to do the same thing over again. So, I pretty much, within a short period of time, made vocal noises and improvised a singing and talking performance to myself for the cassette recorder. I could have actually called this song “Remember Me” since I mumbled it several dozen times in a very annoying way. In one small area of it, towards the end, you can hear me putting a song on the phonograph and then reversing it for a couple seconds. That song was my father’s record he made as the bass player for a group called, “Dave and the Saints.” Also, near the end, you hear me overdubbing with me talking, stating I’m almost 12 years old. That would put that part of the recording in 1981.I think you’ll hear several weird sounds, including what may sound like me urinating in a toilet. Granted, I’ve been accused of doing that before and recording it (only because it’s true) but it’s not true for this recording. I remember distinctly pouring water into the toilet from a large pitcher to get that sound. I always called this “composition” THE CRAZY TAPE, with a secondary title “Experimental Music”; however, there’s no real music on this recording, technically. But I can honestly say that this was my first “composition.” It’s all me and it’s all original, regardless of how silly it sounds. I wrote my first “real” song at age 15, entitled, “I’m So Lonely.”
This is recording/performance #331.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

about

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
