THAT WHICH IS (THE CRITICS TUNE)

from EXPERIMENTAL TAPE (2024 Remaster) by The Santairs

about

I was inspired to write this after watching the Dirty Harry sequel, The Dead Pool. But it also has a ring of truth to it for me personally. When I first starting writing songs, I sent a couple of them to various producers, recording artists, labels, etc.-- the kind of things you'd do when you're first starting out in the 80's. Though I was successful in only selling a couple songs, most things I got back were letters telling me how much more work I needed and that I should write stuff like ME AND BOBBY MCGEE which tells a great story, and so on. (Personally, I never cared very much for that tune.) But after sending several letters off with demos, I realized I was getting the same responses about the BOBBY MCGEE thing, so that told me that this part of the music business was already stacked against me. Anyway, I know I received one letter that was pretty much an UP YOURS, stating things like I suck and need to find a real hobby, etc.--something that a Simon Cowell would say nowadays. Fortunately, I knew I didn't “suck”, so my response was this tune. Of course, I didn't have the funds to record it properly. So now, I was finally able to get to it and at least turn this particular chapter of my music history forward. I actually had some fun with this as I was recording it, and oddly enough, it's still relevant today, but just on a different level. I did change and rearrange of few of the lyrics from what I originally had since what I originally had was only a rough draft. I was also coming off a very bad cold, and you can hear that scratchiness in my voice.
This is song #382.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

That Which Is Inside Of That Brain,
Empty Of Thought, Completely Insane.
A Critic Once Said, Must Criticize,
But Who Gives A Damn When You Put Up A Fight?
And I Can't Stop Being Who I Am For Someone Else.

That Which Is Inside That Head,
Don't Know What's Right, A Troll Instead.
Giving Nothing In Reality,
Taking Your Pride For A Fee.
And I Can't Stop Being Who I Am For Someone Else.

Only A Fool Can Understand. (Understand now, understand?)
Don't Give Your Money For Another Scam. (Another scam now.)

That Which Is Is A Life In Vain,
Making Cash From People's Pain.
Just Like Your Words, Worthless In Truth,
Stealing Talent From The Unheard Youth.
And I Can't Stop Being Who I Am For Someone Else.
(Solo)
Cold-Blooded In Reality;
Crucified All Mindlessly.

That Which Is Inside Of The Brain,
Empty And Void, Completely Insane.
A Critic Once Said, I Must Criticize,
But Who Gives A Shit When You Put Up A Fight?
And I Can't Stop Being Who I Am For Somebody Else.

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
