about

This song was recorded at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle by legendary engineer, Kearney Barton (who recorded The Kingsmen “Jolly Green Giant” of “Louie, Louie” fame, The Sonics “Psycho”, The Frantics “Werewolf”, and many others.) It was an 8 track analog studio, recorded onto 1 inch reel tape. This song was recorded, along with 13 other songs, in a 12 hour session. It was the first session where I met Kearney Barton. I wanted to do this since I knew The Beatles recorded some of their best sounding stuff in much the same way. To this day, I like the fast pace of recording music since it seems more lively to me. By taking too long on a song and second guessing yourself, you tend to bog down the creative process. I'd rather have a few rough areas and even mistakes in songs rather than spending months on a perfect recording that stifles creativity. This song features Wayde Brown (me) on guitar and vocals; my dad Clinton Brown on bass and backing vocals, and Bill Fletcher on drums with Sam Haylor helping on the higher backing vocal part. I remember after the session was over, Kearney said he was very impressed at what we accomplished, especially since we never met before and had barely talked about a game plan. We kind of just went in and did it. The 12 hours included a quick, rough mix down as well. I only overdubbed the lead guitar and my backing vocals. My dad provided the backing vocals during the live take.
To finish off this particular mix, I had to convert it from a cassette format onto the Audacity program on my computer with a JVC TD-W254 Double Cassette Deck 3 motor Silent Mechanism.
This is the 17th song that I wrote. It wasn't meant to be anything except a basic oldies style rock and roll tune that was supposed to sound like it came straight out of the late 1950's. Hopefully it worked. There's a cute line where it says “I can't find the reasons why....” and then the backing vocal sings, “She's a girl.” I was about to change that but everyone who listened to it thought it was funny, so I kept it just like it is, since it showed me people were paying attention to what I was writing. Though it’s a simple song, it took me a couple months to finish writing it.

lyrics

She's A Girl; I Saw Her Walkin' Down The Street.
She's A Girl; A Girl Now That I Want To Meet.
She's A Girl; Who Wants To Hold My Hand.
She's A Girl; That Understands.
She's A Girl; She's A Girl That Understands Now.

She's A Girl; A Girl That Broke My Heart.
She's A Girl; I Knew From The Very Start.
She's A Girl; She's A Girl That Made Me Cry.
She's A Girl; I Can't Find The Reasons Why.
She's A Girl; She's A Girl That Made Me Cry Now.
(Solo)
She's A Girl That Goes Around,
The Kind Of Girl That'll Put You Down.
She's A Girl That'll Break Your Heart.
She Won't Even Give It A Shot.

She's A Girl; A Girl That'll Make You See.
She's A Girl; A Girl That'll Always Be.
She's A Girl; A Girl That'll Stop It All.
She's A Girl; That'll Make Your Hair Crawl.

She's A Girl, Oo, She's A Girl, Oo,
She's A Girl, Oo, She's A Girl.

about

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
