The AVANT-GARDE process: I’m posting some “avant-garde” songs which I consider not be usable in the mainstream in any fashion, but I had a fun time doing them and recording them. Most of these “songs” were recorded on a mono tape recorder (while others were a bit more sophisticated using reel to reel tapes, 2 track recorders, etc.) I recorded the bulk of these “songs” back in the years of 1980-1990. It was something where I was just holding on to the tape recorder and recording sounds, noises, and real life events of things that were happening around me. Some of the sounds had a specific idea and were going to be used on actual songs I wrote but never came to fruition. Some of these songs are only a couple seconds long while others hit the range of over an hour. Thanks to the Audacity program and a computer, I’m able to save these songs onto a digital format before the tapes degrade to a point of no return. I’m posting these as a testament of the evolution of my recording and songwriting experiences, and also as a time capsule of what my childhood was like where creativity was concerned (before I learned how to actually write a “real”song) though most people will find these recordings as garbage or nonsense noises, which is fine by me. And if these “songs” inspire anyone to create something of their own, I would encourage them to continue.
This song was also “cleaned-up” at Audio Recording, Inc. by engineer Kearney Barton and put onto cassette form. Lastly, at this time, I am using a JVC TD-W254 Double Cassette Deck with a 3 motor silent mechanism for the cassette tape transfers.
This song would be 159th on my list of songs I wrote. It was more just an exercise in guitar (knob) performance and not designed to do much else. Of the few dozen or so avant-garde tunes I’ve written or performed, this was one of my favorite ones. This was performed back in 1986. I came up with the title since I was just learning how to become a “better” driver, plus the number 7 is one of my favorite numbers. I remember using a black Electra guitar and an Earth amplifier with a chorus petal. That’s about it.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
