This song was recorded at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle by legendary engineer, Kearney Barton (who recorded The Kingsmen "Jolly Green Giant" of "Louie, Louie" fame, The Sonics "Psycho", The Frantics "Werewolf", and many others.) It was an 8 track analog studio, recorded onto 1 inch reel tape.
This song was pretty much recorded entirely live except the piano part was overdubbed and the lead vocal was double tracked. It was done in 2-3 takes. Even though it's not perfect, the performance and sound was excellent, so we kept this song as is. I wanted the guitars to be completely pure and plain in sound as if it were recorded in the 50's, not in the early 90's like this recording was done.
To finish off this particular mix, I had to convert it from a cassette format onto the Audacity program on my computer with a JVC TD-W254 Double Cassette Deck 3 motor Silent Mechanism.
The players were: Wayde Brown (me) on lead vocals and guitars, Sean Crain on bass, piano, and backing vocals, and Bill Fletcher on drums.
Back in the early 90's, my friend, Sean, stopped by and said, "Let's just write a song off the top of our minds." So, with that, I started the first line with what he said and the song was called OFF THE TOP OF MY MIND. I hadn't written very many rhythm and blues tunes, so I enjoyed working on this. We finished this song off within an hour and recorded it a few weeks later. It's simple, but it's fun. This is one of a few songs I wrote that won some kind of award, finishing in 3rd place for best songs submitted to some contest that I can vaguely remember.
This is the 403rd song I wrote.
