about

This tune was interesting to me. It has several beat changes (which usually isn’t the best thing to do in a song, especially for dancers) but I wanted to write a song that was musically different but still somewhat “normal.” I used a recording I did back in 1986 with me playing bass and singing lead vocals and my father playing the guitar. We recorded it live on my two track recorder. By today’s standards, I can do a much better and cleaner version of this song, but I used this particular recording to do the overdubs since I don’t have very many songs that featured my father, and I hardly have any songs at all that feature him on guitar. I think we did the original recording in one take because I remember my dad making a mistake on the lead guitar and I told him that that was fine by me. So, in that spirit, I overdubbed the drums and tambourine in one take. However, it took a few takes to get the backing vocals down since I didn’t know what to put in it, so I had to learn it. It’s a very rough recording but with really good memories, so this is the version I’m keeping. Lyrically, I would have changed a couple things, but it works for what I was doing.

This is song #156.

Recorded in The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

I HAD YOU AND YOU HAD ME AND WE WERE FEELING SO HAPPY.
I LEFT YOU THEN YOU LEFT AND WE WERE FEELING SO BADLY.

LOVER YOU HAD ME BUT I DIDN’T HAVE YOU.
LOVER, WHAT AM I TO DO?
ALL I WANT IS YOU.
(SOLO)
I WANTED YOU AND YOU WANTED ME AND WILL BE SO HAPPY.
I NEEDED YOU AND YOU NEED ME AND SO HAPPY WE WILL BE IN OUR DREAMS.

LOVER YOU HAD ME BUT I DIDN’T HAVE YOU.
LOVER, WHAT AM I TO DO?
ALL I WANTED WAS YOU.

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
