IT'S MY MIND--A FREE FORM JAM

about

This song was originally mixed at Audio Recording, Inc. in Seattle by legendary engineer, Kearney Barton (who recorded The Kingsmen “Jolly Green Giant” of “Louie, Louie” fame, The Sonics “Psycho”, The Frantics “Werewolf”, and many others.) It was an 8 track analog studio, recorded onto 1 inch reel tape. I had Kearney save it on cassette to preserve the “quality” of the sound (sarcasm intended.)
Now what can I say about this song? It's long in length and it's totally avant-garde, heavily influenced by (no, not drugs, though many have thought that) but by The Beatles Revolution 9 and the avant-garde albums of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison. These recordings took place over several years. You can hear from the voices of me and Sean Crain before we reached puberty so this took place before I ever wrote a real song. (I say I'm probably 12 or 13 years old.) I recorded about 25 minutes of “noise” that day with me and Sean only. Then, when I got into a couple bands, I invited my friends and fellow musicians to come over and record 30 minutes of avant-garde “noises.” Some thought it was the most fun and best times ever. Others thought I had lost my mind. My only instructions to them was to play whatever came to mind and nothing else. The first recordings, when I was an early teenager, was recorded on a mono tape recorder while the latter one, with about 11 musicians and friends, was recorded when I was 16 years old on a two track stereo recorder. When I took these recordings to Audio Recording, I added some more special effects that Kearney's studio was able to provide, mixing it all down into one long track of about an hour long. To make it play on a cassette tape, I spliced the one hour long “song” into two songs, “It's My Mind—Free Form Jam” and “It's My Mind Number#2-With Feeling.” I even got Kearney into this little session by slamming doors, and saying, “Take one, take three, take five” and so forth. I think deep down, musicians need an escape and should do at least one song in their lives to help keep the creative juices flowing.
The musicians and friends who participated in this insane project of mine are as follows:
Wayde Brown (me), Kearney Barton, Jerry O'Neill, Stuart Austin, Jason Hubbard, Sean Crain, Bill Fletcher, Keith Norton, Jon Bearscove, Kevin Glantz, Loren Adams, plus the girl on the couch.
To finish off this particular mix, I had to convert it from a cassette format onto the Audacity program on my computer with a JVC TD-W254 Double Cassette Deck 3 motor Silent Mechanism.
Part one of this “experiment” would be song #76.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
