INNUENDO

from Sequence by Rice Cracker Project

/

about

This song was written by me and Stephen, nearly 50/50, with the music written by the entire Rice Cracker Project group, which includes Nick Wilcox. The idea for the music came from Nick wanting to have a semi-reggae beat during a song’s chorus. This song was originally entitled, “It Ain’t Reggae.” I wrote the verses and Stephen wrote the choruses, with me helping with a word or two in there as well. For the lyrics, I just felt like writing a song about a guy who feels cheating isn’t a bad thing and that attraction to others is totally normal. It’s also a play on words, hence calling the song “Innuendo.” My “story” was more suggestive while Stephen’s was more in your face and direct. I was going for the visual attraction part of the story while Stephen took it into the realm of full sexual, physical attraction. This song came together in a great way and we put it together nicely. The instrumentation was mostly done by myself. Nick originally came up with the bass part and I put the drum part; and the rest of the verses fell together quickly. I felt it was kind of Bill Maher’s intro song to his cable show, “Real Time”, and I wanted to distance myself from that as much as possible, hence putting a separate song into this one which was the reggae part. So, instead of having two songs, we combined them into one. I also took this opportunity to make this song somewhat avant-garde, with a bunch of crazy instruments I had hidden away in the studio and haven’t used much if at all. For the guitar solo, I picked the most annoy sound on my Boss GT-8 pedal and overdubbed several instruments that was slightly out of tune including a theramin. Thinking I went over the top, I had the other members of the group listen to it and, to my surprise, they actually liked it. I originally had this song meld into another one Stephen wrote called “Time Slip,” but that song was voted off the album to my deepest regret. I have a version of these two songs together back to back, but it’s only for my own edification at this point. One day, I may be able to reinstate the two songs together the way I originally envisioned, but for now, this song stands alone.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

WHERE THERE’S SUCH BLATANT INNUENDO,
WHEN PEAKING THROUGH A TINY TINTED WINDOW,
AND FEELING FRISKY AND WANTING TO STAY,
THE WORDS EXCITE THEM, BODY LANGUAGE AT PLAY.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED, UNEXPECTED OCCURRED,
MISUNDERSTANDING ALL THAT THEY HEARD—
THEY’LL SEE THIS THROUGH AND CLARIFY,
TELLING THE TRUTH WHICH STILL CAN BE A LIE.

SHE WANTS IT HER WAY, AND HE WANTS IT HIS WAY
HE HEADS FOR THE FREEWAY, SHE'S OFF ON A SEGUE.
THEY CAN'T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS; THEY’RE STUCK AT THE MIDWAY.
THEY CHECK OUT THE REPLAY, IT ALL TURNS OUT SIDEWAYS.
THEY'VE OPENED UP WALKWAYS, BUT CLOSED OFF THEIR DOORWAYS.
THEY’RE LOST IN THE HALLWAYS, 'CAUSE THEY WANT IT ALL WAYS.
(SOLO)
HE GOES DEEPER, PENETRATING WITHIN;
THEY MUST ABORT, YET THEY DO IT AGAIN.
IT’S NOT A SIN IF NO ONE EVER GETS HURT.
IT’S NOT CHEATING IF IT’S ONLY A FLIRT.

THEIR EYES, STAR CROSSED, AS LOVERS AT NIGHT,
LIKE AN ORGASM CAUSING FIGHT OR FLIGHT.
FIRST AS STRANGERS, BUT NOW ACQUAINTED.
AN ATTRACTION THAT CAN ONLY BE TAINTED.

HE WANTS IT HIS WAY, AND SHE WANTS IT HER WAY.
HE OFFERS SOME FOREPLAY, SHE GRANTS HIM SOME LEEWAY.
HE SHOOTS FOR THE FAIRWAY, BUT SENDS IT OFF SIDEWAYS.
HE STILL THINKS IT’S IN-PLAY, SO SHE FAKES HER "O"-FACE.
HE TAKES IT THE WRONG WAY, SHE TELLS HIM IT’S OKAY.
THEY'VE TAKEN THE LONG WAY, TO GET TO THE SAME PLACE.

about

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
