DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS

from Sequence by Rice Cracker Project

/

about

This song was written during the recording of Rice Cracker Project’s 2nd album called “Sequence.” Nick Wilcox wrote all of the lyrics except the very last line which I did. The song is a bit vague on purpose and the last line I wrote was to continue that thread. However, this song also can have deep, personal meanings. Nick likes to write lyrics that can have many different interpretations, and this is one of those songs. I won’t pretend I know exactly what he was thinking when he wrote them, but I was there when he did. The music was written mostly by me and Nick. Nick was originally going to sing lead to this song, but after awhile, the lyrics spoke to me and I “performed” them. What I mean by that is I decided to sing it with tongue heavily in cheek. After the first take, it was so over the top that it was voted down, which I agreed. If I held back a bit, vocally, then perhaps it would work. And that’s exactly what I did and this performance came out. I don’t usually sing like this so it was fun to capture it. This song also features Stephen Prescott on lead guitar, which is going out of this comfort zone, but I think he did great with it. I consider this one of the more “original” tunes Rice Cracker Project has written since we got together as a band back in 2007.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

WELL THERE WAS JUST ONE CALL THAT WAS WORTH MY TIME,
WE WERE BREAKING OUT OF A CLEVER CRIME,
AND I TELL YOU SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL SO COOL. . .

AND THEN WE WERE JUST ONE DOT ON A SLENDER LINE,
ONLY TO PROVE MY POINT IT WAS SO SUBLIME,
AND YOU TOLD ME SOMETHING THAT WAS SO AGAINST THE RULES. . .

BUT IF I COULD PLACE MY THOUGHTS OVER WHAT WE SHOULD DO,
CONSIDER THE TOTAL LACK OF ANY GOLDEN RULE
ABOUT THE DIRTY LITTLE SECRETS THAT WE ALL PUT AWAY FOR YOU. . .

SO I’LL REPLACE THE LOCKS ON THESE SILENT TRUTHS,
KEEPING A COMFORTABLE DISTANCE FROM THE UNHEARD YOUTH,
AND WE’LL PRETEND THAT THERE’S NOTHING AGAINST THE RULES.

TEARING DOWN THE WALLS OF EVERY HOKE PHILOSOPHY,
AND BREAKING UP ALL OF THE SILENCE OF RESPONSIBILITY,
YOU NEEDED MORE OF WHAT WE SHARED AND WANTED MORE OF EVERY THOUGHT INSIDE MY HEAD.

SO NOW WE ARE JUST ONE DOT ON A SLENDER LINE,
ONLY TO PROVE MY POINT, IT WAS SO SUBLIME;
AND THEN THAT ONE LAST CALL, IT WAS WORTH MY TIME.
WE HAD BROKEN OUT OF THAT CLEVER CRIME,
AS YOU TOLD ME SOMETHING THAT WAS SO AGAINST THE RULES.

…DO WHAT YOU’VE DONE, WHAT YOU'RE DOIN' TO ME!
WHY DO YOU DO WHAT YOU'VE DONE WHAT YOU'RE DOIN' TO ME? (3X)

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
