This is one of the few avant-garde songs I’ve written where it’s actually a real song. In 1987, I wrote and recorded a guitar and bass part along with scratch vocals onto a cassette tape. On December 1st, 2013, I dug it out and took it to the music studio where I tripled tracked the drums and another lead guitar part. Lastly, I added one small backing part and re-did the lead vocals. I used many different effects to get the vocals sounding the way I wanted, including backwards vocals which were also heavily manipulated. The music is very discordant, which is exactly the way I wanted. It’s all off timing and yet comes back into a rhythm that one can follow. It does take about a minute and a half to get to the point, which was by design. I was influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett, and The Doors when I was writing this. I kept this all inside me until I was ready to record the final version. The story actually comes from a girl I “dated” back in the day, where she introduced me to the term “sadomasochism.” I had no idea what that was and when I found out, out popped this song.
