This is one of the first songs I wrote where my dad stated I had an actual bridge, and a catchy one at that (even though it’s more of a chorus). This song was Beatles inspired (think of “Things We Said Today”), but I never fully tried to finish this song the way I think it deserves. Right now, this is the only recorded version I have of it, and it was recorded in the worst of circumstances. For this session, which was only the second in my life, I recorded all the tracks live (guitar, bass, drums, vocals) with overdubs on tambourine and backing vocals only. It was done at Audio Recording, Inc. but it wasn’t engineer Kearney Barton (who usually did the sessions) who recorded it. This was done as a project with UW college students who wanted to learn more about music engineering. Since the session was free, I brought my band, The Santairs, for the recording (which included my dad on bass). The students really didn’t have a clue on sound (nor did I at the time, so all is fair in love and music.) The overall sound was muddy and the bass part, which was integral to the entire song, especially the bridge, was nearly non-existent. They also used a one inch reel tape that was several years old and had been overdubbed at least a few dozen times, so the quality of the recording itself was subpar. After the sessions were over, I kept this song and put it away in storage. I worked on it a little back in 2012, but never cared for that reworking of it either. Then, on May 8th, 2014, I found another raw recording of this song and combined it with the mixed version the students made. In this newer mix, I panned the sound of each recording, then overdubbed several more lead and backing vocals in my personal home studio using the Audacity recording software. Of course, my Samson microphone broke, so I used my back-up, a cheap $10 computer microphone. I had a fun time just trying to balance the sound with that. At least now, I can consider this a worthy demo edition of a recording I never thought I could save.
