about

Sometime around 1986, a girlfriend of mine wrote this poem and wanted me to put music to it. I recorded it live onto a two track recorder, with one track for the guitar and the other for my lead vocal. It was a demo in the roughest sense, but there was something raw and powerful about my lead vocal that I didn't think I could duplicate when I decided to finish this recording, so I decided to use the demo and layer it with overdubs. After a few hours of working on it, and using a few recording “trickery” techniques, I had a finished version of this song. It's nowhere near perfect, but the lady who wrote this way back in the day probably wouldn't have wanted this song to be pure and pretty, but rather raw and messy. I think it would fit her personality of what she went through back then, and I hope this honors her in the way she had originally envisioned. (I'm just sorry it took me 30 years to finally complete it.)

This is song #297.

Recorded at The CELL BLOCK Studio in Auburn, WA.

lyrics

WHEN I WAS A CHILD, I RAN THROUGH THE NIGHT RAIN,
AND REVELED IN THE VAST OPEN SPACES IN WHICH TO HIDE.
BUT YOU PROMISED LOVE AND AN END TO THE PAIN,
AND I WENT THROUGH THE NIGHT RAIN WITH YOU BY MY SIDE.

BLACKNESS HIDES MY FACE.
RAIN HIDES MY TEARS.
I WANTED YOU IN THAT PLACE,
I WOULD HAVE WAITED FOR YEARS.

NOW YOU LOVE A GIRL MADE OF SUNLIGHT,
AND I'M ALONE WHEN THE RAIN FALLS ALL NIGHT.
AND YOU LOVE A GIRL MADE OF SUNLIGHT!
WHERE ARE YOU WHEN I'M ALONE TONIGHT?
ARE YOU WITH HER WHEN THE RAIN FALLS ALL NIGHT?

EVEN THROUGH A CONCEALING DARK,
I FOUND SOMETHING I COULD CALL A START.
ALL I WANT TO BE IS ALONE. MY MIND IS MY HOME.
I'LL BUILD A CASTLE OF TEARS AND CALL IT MY HOME.

about

The Santairs Auburn, Washington

I am a musician, singer, and songwriter doing this part-time but have been doing it all my life. I started singing before I could talk at the age of one, and wrote my first real song at 15 years of age. (If you count avant-garde as a song, then the age would be 7.) I currently own my own recording studio; and I write, perform, and record my own music (and other's from time to time.) I am Santairs. ... more
