The original recording of “All That Matters Is You” was done at Audio Recording, Inc. by Kearney Barton back in 1988. A couple months afterward, I decided to do an experiment on tape drifting since it was a new phenomenon to me. I had, what I considered, to be two good cassette decks. I always thought they played at nearly the same speed, but I was sure wrong. So, with a radio shack mono tape recorder, I recorded this project where I had two different cassettes of “All That Matters Is You” and put them on two different tape recorders, then pressed play at the same time. The tape timing drift was quite significant. It even seems to catch up to itself as a secondary backing vocal nearly halfway through it. I found out later that a 3 head cassette tape deck usually is more on track for keeping the timing close to an actual original recording. In 2010, I purchased one for around $30 brand new. If I had tried to buy one back in the late 80’s, it would have cost me nearly $700. When cassette tapes became obsolete, these things got much cheaper, but the quality is still professional. And though I love the digital age we live in, I do have a special place in my heart for analog, reel to reel, and cassette tapes. I still have some 8-track tapes around somewhere with an 8-track recorder. Talk about old school! I transferred this recording from its original source which was a Radio Shack Teac cassette with Normal Type Bias, noise reduction, EQ: 120, 60 minutes in length. This is recording #342.
